An defense official has revealed that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about classified information in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
