LA Faces Record-Breaking Heat Just Days Following Severe Winter Storm.
After enduring significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unseasonably high temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
On Friday midday, the thermometer reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, per data from meteorologists. This easily surpasses the old record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was recorded in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were highlighted on official maps for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's conditions posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving anyone unattended in a car.
An Extreme Reversal
This dramatic increase in mercury arrives just after a intense storm system that battered the region last week. That event delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, triggering mudslide risks for many residents.
Tragically, the conditions also triggered a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict cooler conditions will arrive. Readings were expected to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by overnight.
Other locales that experienced 90°F were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to reach the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central LA can expect weather in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the week ahead.
