Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
