Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
