Forecasters have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, following last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," said the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Readings Expected to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Advisories Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
